5 Reasons to Shop Second Hand
Are you tired of all the cookie-cutter decor and fast trends from Home Goods? Shopping second hand - and especially from antique stores - may be just what you need to stop falling into the trap of needing all the newest things! Here are some of the best reasons to skip big box brand stores and start shopping small, smart and secondhand.
It’s better for the planet
I don’t know about you but I don’t want to colonize Mars so I’m hoping to have Earth be livable for a while longer. Shopping secondhand reduces landfill waste, cuts down on the demand for new production and uses fewer resources (ie energy, packaging and transportation).
Your wallet will thank you
Shopping secondhand is often cheaper than buying new items of the same quality. And if you’re investing in antiques and items of quality craftsmanship the potential resale value when it’s time to let it go is much higher than cheaply made newer items.
Style that tells a story
When you shop from antique stores you’re purchasing pieces that are often one-of-a-kind that no one else has! A vast majority of antique and vintage items were hand made which means each piece will be slightly different from the next. And maybe that also means that it won’t be “perfect” but there’s beauty in that too! Vintage items feel more meaningful that the mass-produced new things in big box stores that everyone has. And don’t worry about your antique finds not “fitting in” to your more modern living spaces! Antiques will always look right at home even mixed with modern luxuries. Remember - a curated home looks collected, not copied. It’s the unique items that will give your home the edge!
It’s a treasure hunt!
This may be the most fun reason. You never know what you’re going to find when you peruse your favorite thrift & antique stores. Unexpected surprises are part of the magic of shopping secondhand!
You’re supporting real people
Most thrift and antique stores are owned by your local neighbors. Not only are they owned by your peers but often the inventory is also locally sourced! Which means these antique stores are building and supporting the community and keeping your dollars in your own town!
See, shopping secondhand is goof for you, your home, your budget, and the world! Not to mention it’s just plain fun. This week get out and browse some of the local shops here in town! There’s of course Clover House Antiques, and my favorite larger antique mall - Conroe Woodlands Antique Mall. If you’re looking for more of the resale vibe than antiques check out Assistance League and Bargain Box in downtown or Jazzy Junque off 45!
Happy Shopping!
